Good Discernment

Happy Tuesday, everyone!

I don’t know about you, but Daylight Savings has been a big adjustment for me this year, but not necessarily in a bad way (getting the extra hour of sleep was nice.). Someone remind me, though: why do participate in Daylight Savings again? It still doesn’t make much sense to me.

But I digress.

Today, my Bible reading included this passage from Psalm 119, and I came across the term “good discernment” (friends reading the AMP, KJV and NRSV will see the words “good judgment and knowledge” in the text). It made me wonder: is it possible to have bad discernment?

Then I got to thinking that given our natural bias toward sin (and away from God) that this “good discernment” is something that can only be revealed to us by the Holy Spirit. Otherwise, we tend to rely upon our own impressions and judgments, rather than the Lord’s.

These are my morning reflections, at any rate. What thoughts do you have to share?

  1. Yes we can have bad discernment, or at least I can. Like today, I wasn’t particularly happy about a situation, something I have been faced with A LOT lately. Lots of situations that I am not happy with. Anger, resentment, lots of grumbling. INSTEAD of trusting that this is ALL a part of God’s will, His plan, and to be happy, joyful, and quit all the griping so I can hear, see, learn this lesson. I am sure there are other examples but this is the one that came to mind immediately 🙂
