This passage from the book of James is simply flat-out one of my favorite verses in the Bible. Why? Well, while not endorsing any sort of prosperity gospel theology, it reminds me that there is a connection between our humility before and submission to the Lord, and the subsequent honor that He will bestow on us.

Note that this may or may not happen in our lifetimes, but it will happen, because God (who is good) always keeps His promises. Note that the verse doesn’t say that He might exalt us, or that He’s still debating the matter in His mind. Quite the opposite! Yes, the Lord is a Man of His Word.

So hold fast to hope, dear friends. And not just any old hope, but the true hope that can only come by casting our gaze steadfastly and unreservedly upon the Lord. He is trustworthy!
